There are basically two different kinds of soldering available to the hobbyist: Lead-soldering and silver-soldering.

Lead-soldering uses a mixture and tin and lead as the solder. This type of soldering is mostly used for electronics, and is used to solder copper together. The solder is not very strong.

Silver-soldering is used to connect other types of metal – typically iron, brass etc.
